Leaning into her passion for small business and community building, Jessica is actively involved several local organizations, including the Chamber of Commerce, the Greater Chattanooga Hospitality Association, the Department of Tourism, and arts outreach via the Be the Change Youth Initiative. Julia McNair has owned Do It Yourself Crafts in Birmingham, Alabama, for 25 years but has worked in customer service since her first job when she was 16. The common thread seems to be that she likes talking to people. If you’ve met her, you might already know this. She has worked in a bookstore (where she was able to read all day), as a barista (where she drank coffee all day), waited tables (obviously she ate all day), and now paints pottery all day, every day. What a life! Her greatest achievement was getting a handprint from a baby who was less than 12 hours old. The unofficial motto of Do It Yourself Crafts is “Making Babies Cry Since 1999.” She likes to remind children who are having a come-apart that not only did the parents ask her to get that print on a coffee mug, they are paying her money to do it. The kid may not laugh, but Julia does. She’s been involved with the CCSA as a writer for the magazine CCSA Today, served as a Board Member, and served as president of the Board. She has taught several classes at conventions over the years. Julia’s son Henry will be a freshman in college in the fall of 2024, which is insane, because he was a baby at the convention in Orlando, which was just yesterday. No one can believe that he’s a grown-up now, since we certainly are not aging. In her spare time, she's a voracious reader and has reached the stage of life where she's very excited by the birds in her backyard. You can find her non-pottery-related writing at Julia-McNair.com.
